DAS Science Squad Attends 2015 State Science Olympiad

Discovery Academy of Science - Success at the State Science Olympiad

The Discovery Academy Science (DAS) Olympiad team, with team members from 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades, competed in the Florida State Science competition on Saturday, May 9th. As a STEM+R (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Reading) school, DAS is involved in many events and competitions that involve those areas.

The Science Olympiad is a science and engineering-focused nationwide competition. Students contend in academic and engineering topics, called "events." Elementary science Olympiad teams consist are made up of top performing students in 2nd through 5th grades.

In academic year 2013-14, DAS formed a Science Olympiad team (as well as a robotics team) for students in grades K-3. In 2014, the first Science Olympiad state competition team consisted of seven students in 2nd and 3rd grades. Among 42 teams DAS students received 7th place in one competition.

This year, DAS was one of 43 teams from schools in north and central Florida that participated in the state championship round. DAS participated in all 11 events and achieved a promising result, placing 13th overall.

After hard work and coming to school every Saturday to work on their events, DAS students outperformed many contestants from higher grades and received 6th and 7th places in most of their events.

Principal, Emre Akbaba said "I would like to thank all of our coaches and students for their dedication and diligence. After receiving a great initial result, we are now all looking forward to next year's Science Olympiad.
Our goal is to win the state championship in two years."
