Protecting Students in a Digital Learning Environment
Discovery Academy of Science is committed to providing students with safe, responsible access to technology and online resources.
Our Internet Safety Policy establishes expectations for the use of school-owned devices, school networks, digital tools, online communication, and student information. The policy is designed to support learning while protecting students, school systems, and confidential information.
How DAS Protects Students Online
Content Filtering
School-owned devices and networks use filtering tools to block inappropriate or unsafe online content.
Safe Communication
Student use of email, chat, and other electronic communication is monitored and must follow school expectations.
Network Security
Students may not bypass security controls, access restricted systems, or attempt unauthorized access to school technology.
Student Privacy
Digital tools used with students must meet appropriate privacy and data-protection standards.
Social Media Restrictions
Access to social media on school-owned devices or school internet is restricted unless specifically approved for an educational purpose.
Restricted Platforms
TikTok and successor platforms are prohibited on school-owned devices and through school-provided internet access.
Student Responsibilities
Use Technology Safely and Responsibly
Students are expected to use school technology for appropriate educational purposes and follow school rules whenever using school-owned devices or networks.
Students should:
- protect passwords and personal information
- use respectful and appropriate online communication
- avoid inappropriate or harmful content
- never attempt to bypass filters or security controls
- avoid installing unapproved software or applications
- report suspicious activity, unsafe content, or security concerns to a staff member
- treat school devices and technology equipment responsibly
The school’s acceptable-use guidance also states that misuse of technology may result in loss of privileges or disciplinary action.
Protecting Personal Information
Privacy Matters
Students should not share personal information such as addresses, telephone numbers, passwords, or other identifying information through school technology without appropriate authorization.
Teachers and staff are expected to review third-party digital tools before using them with students to help ensure appropriate privacy and safety protections are in place.
Working Together for Online Safety
Keeping students safe online requires cooperation between the school, students, and families.
DAS regularly reviews its internet safety practices as technology changes, and families are encouraged to reinforce safe, responsible technology habits at home. Violations of the policy are handled through established school disciplinary procedures.
